A clown at a birthday party, a Broadway show, or your friends fighting over the last potato chip are all forms of entertainment. From the French entretenement, it means to keep or support (a guest) or amuse. Entertaiment comes in many forms: theatrical as shows, visual as art or things you like to look at, and audio as music or stories you like to hear. A classic example is the story of Scheherazade in the Persian professional storytelling tradition. It inspired Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel and Szymanowski to write orchestral works, Pasolini to make a film, and even an innovative video game.
