Poker is a game of chance, but also requires a great deal of skill. Generally, the player with the highest-ranking cards wins. If two players have the same high card, then the player with the higher number of cards breaks the tie. Pairs consist of two cards of the same rank. A straight consists of five consecutive cards of the same suit. Three of a kind contains three matching cards of one rank. A flush contains four cards of the same rank, while a full house contains three matching cards of one rank and two matching cards of another rank.
The game of poker requires good money management. You should only call or raise a bet that you can afford to lose, and you should never over-bet. You should always try to improve your hand strength before betting. If you have a strong hand pre-flop, you can force weaker hands to fold and increase the value of your pot.
